Community Archiving Workshop
Monday October 19, 2026 10:00am - 5:00pm EEST
The Community Archiving Workshop is a one-day workshop that centers community building and the preservation of audiovisual collections, bringing together archivists and community volunteers to support the preservation of a local audiovisual collection. The workshop begins with educational presentations addressing the identification of audiovisual formats and their risk factors. Participants then break into groups and work together to inspect and inventory the collection. The primary outcome is to train workshop participants on the handling and care of audiovisual collections, to engage local community members in processing and describing their community’s audiovisual assets, and to process a small collection of recordings in preparation for preservation.

Returning to the IASA conference for the third time, the workshop will partner with Meno Avilys—a Vilnius-based non-governmental organization founded in 2005 by a group of like-minded people who work independently in the field of film and audiovisual media. Meno Avilys is committed to fostering media education and the cognition of film culture through organizing screenings of unconventional cinema, inviting discussions and informal conversations, and helping filmmakers to develop and produce their first films. Meno Avilys preserves audiovisual heritage and upholds its relevance, promotes gender equality in the film industry through research, and creates space for silenced or less-heard voices in film culture.
