Alex Waterman was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1975. He is a cellist and composer as well as a musicologist, curator, and archivist, currently the audiovisual archivist atthe World Music Archives at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. A founding member of the Plus-Minus Ensemble, he has performed extensively, including at DiaBeacon, New York, with Takehisa Kosugi for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Waterman’s sound works have been shown at venues such as Bonnefanten Museum,Maastricht, Netherlands; Centre d’art contemporain d’intérêt national, Brétigny, France; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Kunstverein, Amsterdam; and the WhitneyMuseum of American Art, New York. He curated Agapê at Miguel Abreu Gallery and Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music at the Kitchen(both in New York, 2007). He has published five books with the typographer Will Holder and has collaborated on two short films with artist Beatrice Gibson. He produced anddirected three of composer Robert Ashley’s operas, including his final Crash (2015). Waterman was the Archivist at The Kitchen in New York from 2021 to 2025.
