The Research Archives Section of IASA addresses issues of sound and audiovisual archives whose holdings include collections of unique and usually non-commercial recordings, such as field recordings, curated primarily for research purposes. The meetings of the Research Archive Section include possibilities for its members to share information on ongoing projects as well as discuss common issues with colleagues from all over the world. The Research Archive Section invites its members to meetings twice a year, at the annual conference as well as an online meeting in between.

At every meeting, the Research Archive Section invites lecturers on topics of relevance to archivists and researchers working with audiovisual collections at research archives. The topic of this years meeting will be “Rescuing Sámi Voices from Wax: Czech–Swedish Collaboration in Preserving the Karl Tirén Joik Collection“; a report on an ongoing collaboration project between Svenskt visarkiv (The Centre for Swedish Folk music and Jazz Research) in Stockholm and the Sound lab at the National Museum in Prague. With the expertise in sound preservation from phonograph cylinders at the Sound Lab at the National Museum of Prague, the project aims to digitize broken and damaged phonograph cylinders of the Karl Tirén Collection of Sámi Joik held at Svenskt visarkivs and recently added to the
UNESCO Memory of the World List. The invited speakers will be Wictor Johansson (Svenskt visarkiv, Stockholm), Filip Sir and Geoff Tyson (National Museum, Prague).
