In 2024, Folkmusikens hus released Spelkvinnor i Dalarna, an album bringing together archive recordings of female fiddle players from Dalarna who were born between the 1890s and 1930s. These field recordings, gathered from across amateur and institutional collections in the Folkmusikens hus archive, give an insight into the lives and music-making of nine women who began playing the fiddle in the first half of the 1900s, a time when it was supposed that women were largely absent from instrumental folk music in Sweden. To present these recordings and their contexts to a wider audience the album combined the field recordings with new spoken word vignettes, written biographies and artwork, and an accompanying exhibition and concert were commissioned. This presentation highlights how material in sound archives can be used challenge historical preconceptions and reflects on the challenges and possibilities of presenting musical field recordings in an artistic form that engages with the people and stories behind the music.
