Many organisations in the IASA community are currently in the middle of developing and adopting organisational AI policies. These efforts require organisations to make practical choices about acceptable use, risk, responsibility, staff capability and the relationship between AI adoption and institutional values. These processes are far from straightforward, as many conflicting attitudes about how AI should and should not be used often coexist within the same organisational context. This means that inevitably some people will disagree with choices made at the policy level and will be hesitant or refuse to adhere to them.

So how can we ensure that the organisation as a whole gets behind its AI policies? We think it is important to consider not only what these policies say but also how they are developed. We frame AI policy development as a trust and capacity building exercise that can help different parts of the organisation better understand each other’s perspectives on AI.

This workshop is generative; instead of offering a successful recipe for how to develop AI policies, we are inviting the IASA community members to exchange successes and common pitfalls. During the session, participants will converse in groups on strategies to engage colleagues in their organisations in co-development of AI policies which can lead to better understanding, ownership and accountability. Participants will leave with practical ideas, peer-tested approaches and concrete questions to take back to their own organisations.
