Protecting the Real and Identifying the Fake: Human Rights Centered Approaches to Disclosing Provenance and Detecting Generative AI

Trust is fundamental to archives. As generative AI becomes integrated throughout the digital content lifecycle, archival collections may become accidentally or maliciously polluted with unlabeled manipulated content. Archives may find themselves unwittingly misrepresenting synthetic fake content as real, gradually eroding the reliability of their collections. In a worst-case scenario, archives’ hard-earned trust could even be weaponized by bad actors in disinformation campaigns in order to re-write historical narratives.

Disclosure mechanisms and AI detection tools are key in asserting authenticity and tackling AI-generated deception. Disclosure includes methods like metadata, watermarks, and fingerprinting. Meanwhile, AI detection consists of methods of identifying patterns that differentiate synthetic media from non-synthetic media to determine the likelihood that a piece of content was AI-generated/modified. Disclosure and detection can contribute to more secure and inclusive digital information ecosystems that can respond to emerging threats to democracy and human rights.

The tutorial seeks to share knowledge about the global landscape of deceptive AI and existing technical solutions, drawing from WITNESS’s foundational research and advocacy on synthetic media in consultation with human rights defenders, journalists, and technologists; and from years of supporting community-based human rights archiving initiatives. It will include insights gleaned from WITNESS’s participation in the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), and real-life examples analyzed by our Deepfake Rapid Response Force to illustrate the effectiveness and challenges of disclosure and detection.
